Because one of my main goals is to inspire you, each week I will be posting about a positive personal experience as part of an ongoing series I’ve named Inspiring Ideas. Now on to this week’s topic…
Nine times out of ten, I am the girl who is always, always smiling. I love nothing more than being nice to people and having the potential to possibly brighten someone’s day even if I’m not having the best day myself. Plus, people treat you differently when you smile. It’s almost as if they relax. Try it. After reading Rhi’s post on her blog, Hey Gorgeous, I decided I wanted to take a step beyond smiling and act too.
On a recent Friday morning, I pulled into the drive thru at Dunkin’ Donuts. I decided instantly that if someone pulled in behind me I was going to pay for their order too. Well, someone did, and I got really nervous. How do I do this? What if she’s on a coffee run for her whole office? Will she be mad? Yikes. There’s a point where you should just stop thinking.
I placed my order, drove to the window, and instantly got really excited as I said that I wanted to pay for the woman behind me too. I paid, and then I decided to drive away immediately because I was a little too giddy. Guys, I forgot my order. At this point, I’m now standing at the window waiting for my ham, egg, and cheese on a croissant because backing up and hitting this woman’s car would have totally ruined the gesture.
As I was waiting to turn (breakfast successfully in hand), I happened to look back as the lady with order 172 pulled up behind me. She was smiling. I hope I made her day, but even if I didn’t at least I made her smile. That simple gesture was awesome and powerful, and I am definitely doing it again.

Put good into the world, y’all. We need it.
P.S: Read my previous Inspired Ideas post here.
Yay! This makes me happy :)
Thank you, Rhi! I adore your positive blog!
I’ve done this a couple of times and I get SO NERVOUS too!! Makes me feel better that I’m not the only one. Last time I did it the drive-thru lady tried to give me both my order and the person behind me’s order. It took forever for her to understand what was happening, but once she figured it out everyone was happy!
Hi Emma! No, you are not alone at all! Thankfully, the woman bringing me my order understood what I was doing, but if she hadn’t I would have become even more nervous. I definitely learned that the best thing to do is to just do it and hope for the best.
In light of what’s been happening in Boston, we sure do need to put good into the world. Wonderful post!
Thank you so much!
I did this in a donut shop. My favorite Yum-Yum”s. I told him to pay it forword. You’re right, I felt great all day.
So happy you’ve done it too! It’s more fun to give back at your favorite spots.
