I’ve mentioned it before, and if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you’ve gotten to see pictures of my favorite place in the world. I love Kiawah Island, South Carolina. It’s a small barrier island located 45 minutes outside of Charleston, and it hosted the 2012 PGA Championship. It’s home to the five star Sanctuary Hotel and the famed Ocean Course, but this island means so much more to me than any accolade awarded to it.
I call Kiawah (at least to myself and my parents), My Kiawah. I’ve been visiting this island, and staying in my condo with its bright green walls, several times each and every year since I was born. I’m 24. I’ve gone on more bike rides than I could ever write about, and I’ve played enough board games and bingo to last a lifetime. I’ve been my dad’s golf cart driver on some of the prettiest courses I think I’ll ever see. Employees have stopped being employees, and they’ve instead turned into close friends and “family”. I get up at dawn to see the sunrise at least once during each summer trip, and every sunset takes my breath away.
And then there’s the beach.
When I walk onto the beach for the first time during each and every trip, I cry. I’m not kidding. I say a silent prayer that no one is around me because I cry every.single.time. I could pitch a tent and live on the beach on Kiawah during any season, but the summer is my favorite. I love walking on the beach in the waves. I love reading by the ocean. I love boogie boarding with my fearless mom (she’s awesome).
Kiawah has gone beyond being my favorite place. My soul is home when I’m on Kiawah. I feel free and fearless and the most alive when I’m there. I love Kiawah fiercely because even in the rain it’s perfect. That’s true love.
This is where I was last week:
Here’s the sneakiest of peeks of the styled photo shoot my friends Sarah, Sarah M, Jeni, and I designed together. I can’t wait to share more! Using my Nana’s vintage English china was the biggest honor:
Where is your favorite place in the world? I’d love to know!
